The Smoky Mountains of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park got their name from the veil of blue mist that seems omnipresent even in the finest weather. Gatlinburg makes a good base for starting or concluding your visit. US 441 (New Found Gap Road) runs through the heart of the park, providing views of rugged wilderness such as Clingman's Dome, the highest point in the park at 6,500 feet.
